Following close contact with infected humans some animals may show clinical signs of SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent of COVID-19.
On the 27th July 2020 the UK’s Chief Veterinary Officer has confirmed that SARS-CoV-2which is the virus known to cause COVID-19 in humans has been detected in a pet cat in the UK.
Based on an extremely small number globally, there is emerging evidence that some animals can become infected with, and may show clinical signs of, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

Tests must only be conducted in the health and welfare interest of the animals with specific clinical signs. To consider testing, a case needs to meet 4 criteria.

NationWide Laboratories offers swab testing by PCR with oropharyngeal swabs for animals that meet specified criteria.
a. The animal is a Felid, Canid or Mustelid. AND
b. It is exhibiting a combination of the following clinical signs as determined by a veterinary professional:
i. respiratory infection
ii. gastrointestinal infection
c. other common diagnoses have been considered and discounted as determined by a veterinary professional.
d. the animal has had confirmed contact with a suspect or known human case of COVID-19 within 3 weeks of developing clinical signs.
Based on current scientific knowledge oropharyngeal or rectal swabs are the only suitable specimen types for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 infection in animals.
